If your BMW is equipped with the ZF 6HP automatic transmission, servicing the fluid and filter is one of the best things you can do to keep it shifting smoothly for years to come.

This German made, Genuine ZF transmission filter and oil pan assembly is designed for BMW models equipped with the higher-output ZF 6HP26 and 6HP28 automatic transmissions, which were fitted to many higher-torque petrol and diesel engines across the E-series BMW range.

Unlike older transmissions with a separate filter, the ZF 6HP design integrates the transmission filter into the sump pan, meaning the entire pan assembly is replaced during servicing. This Genuine ZF unit is the same component supplied by the original manufacturer of the gearbox, ensuring the best filtration performance, sealing surfaces, and fluid pickup design that the transmission was engineered around.

While BMW originally described the fluid in these transmissions as “lifetime”, experience with these vehicles over the past two decades has shown that regular servicing makes a significant difference to both shift quality and long-term transmission life.

Whether you’re frequently towing with an E70 X5 on the weekends, or simply daily driving in traffic in an E90 330d, the transmission fluid is constantly working under heat and load. Over time the fluid gradually breaks down, while the internal filter captures fine clutch material and other contaminants produced during normal operation.

Replacing the filter pan during a service restores proper filtration and fluid flow, helping the transmission maintain stable hydraulic pressure and consistent shift behaviour. Many owners notice smoother gear changes after servicing, particularly on higher-kilometre vehicles where the original fluid has never been changed.

HELPFUL TIPS

When servicing these transmissions it is important to follow the correct temperature-based filling procedure, as the fluid level must be set with the transmission at a specific operating temperature. We recommend either ZF Genuine fluid or Motul Multi ATF in these transmissions.
