The crankcase ventilation oil separator (also known as the PCV and CCV) recirculates the small amount of blow-by gas, created by oil leaking past the rings in the combustion chamber. Over time, the valve can become clogged, causing oil to be pushed back and burnt in the combustion chamber and creating smoke and carbon deposits. Replace yours with this quality part from Febi Bilstein.
Helpful tips
The plastic breather hose can become very brittle over time, breaking easily during installation, so it's often worth grabbing a spare before starting the job.
