DESCRIPTION

As BMW technology has advanced, so too has the design of their water pumps. Many late-model BMWs are equipped with electric water pumps that can continue circulating coolant even when the engine is off (for automatic start/stop systems), while also reducing engine load to improve performance and efficiency.

These pumps have the demanding job of moving large volumes of coolant through the engine and turbochargers at high pressure, which makes them prone to wear over time. Common issues include cracked housings or complete failure after years of service.

HELPFUL TIPS

Avoid this water pumps coming into contact with oil (from leaks, spills, etc.). An internal gasket seal is known to swell with oil contact and will crack the pump.
