Front Tension Strut (Control Arm) - Right

The front upper control arm, commonly referred to as the tension arm, is one of the most critical — and most commonly worn — suspension components on BMW E8x, E9x and E84 X1 models.

BMW uses a sophisticated front suspension design with large, hydraulic rubber bushes in the tension arms. This design is a big part of why these cars ride so well and feel so stable under braking, as it allows controlled compliance to absorb road impacts while maintaining excellent steering precision. The trade-off is that these bushes work very hard and, over time, are prone to wear.

As the hydraulic bush degrades, the arm can no longer properly control longitudinal wheel movement. This typically shows up as steering shimmy under braking, vague or wandering steering, knocking noises over bumps, and uneven front tyre wear. Even when other suspension components appear serviceable, worn tension arms can have a disproportionate effect on how the car drives.

Replacing worn tension arms restores correct suspension behaviour, improves braking stability, sharpens steering response, and brings back the planted, confidence-inspiring front-end feel these cars are known for.
