DESCRIPTION
The rear differential carrier bushing (rear position) plays a critical role in how the rear of your BMW feels under load. This bushing supports the rear of the differential housing, controlling movement during acceleration, deceleration, and gear changes.
Over time, the factory rubber degrades and softens, allowing excessive differential movement. This commonly leads to driveline clunks when taking off, shudder during gear changes, and a vague or unsettled feel through the rear of the car. On higher-torque models, worn rear differential bushings can also accelerate wear on other mounts and driveline components.
This bushing is manufactured by Febi and is the same component supplied to BMW for factory installation, with the BMW logo removed. It matches the original bushing in rubber compound, stiffness, and dimensions, ensuring correct NVH control and factory-correct driveline behaviour. We choose to supply this OEM-quality bushing rather than aftermarket alternatives that are often either too soft (short service life) or too stiff (increased noise and vibration).
Replacing the rear differential carrier bushing restores proper differential location, improves driveline response, and eliminates unwanted movement without introducing additional noise or harshness.
HELPFUL TIPS
This bushing is commonly replaced alongside the front differential bushings (available in both M3 and standard types) or rear subframe bushings when addressing driveline movement. Installation typically requires the correct press tools, and access is easier with the exhaust and heat shields removed.PART NUMBERS
