Description

The hydraulic tensioner helps maintain the correct amount of pressure on the drive belt, ensuring there's enough traction for auxiliary components to run correctly. Over time the internal piston seals inside these hydraulic tensioners can wear out, reducing the tension and leading to water pump and alternator failures. Manufactured by OEM tensioner supplier to BMW, INA, and repackaged by IPD Germany.

Helpful tips

On some models BMW fitted both mechanical and hydraulic belt tensioners, and the only way to know which one has been fitted to your BMW is with a visual inspection of the tensioner itself. If you have the mechanical tensioner, it will look like a little metal can (in which the spring is housed), or if you have the hydraulic tensioner, you should see a little piston like the one pictured above.
