Over time, the shock mounts on your E39 are known to deteriorate and fail. Odd noises such and metal-to-metal banging or clanking could be a sign of failed shock mounts. We strongly recommend replacing these when installing new shock absorbers or during any suspension work where you have easy access to the rear mounts, so as to prevent issues in the future.
Please note, these shocks mounts are not suitable for vehicles with Electronic Damper Control (EDC).
